Island Life Diaries: Suzi Culbert

1. Where are you from?

I’m from Scotland, more importantly I am a Glaswegian.

2. Why did you move from the comfort of your homeland?

I often joke that it was because I was tired of applying fake tan, which I am ashamed to say is partly true.  The weather in Scotland can be quite difficult to manage.  There is a lot of rain and we rarely get to see the sun, but when the sun comes out it is probably one of the most beautiful countries in the world and the people are so happy to see the sun that it possibly has the best energy too.

3. What made you choose Cayman?

I had a family friend who was working out here.  I contacted him about a job and within 2 weeks I was on a plane on my way to Cayman!  I had never visited here and had never lived in another country before.  The plane journey was nerve-racking! I remember landing in Nassau and looking out the window thinking “Oh no!  What have I done….”  Then we flew over Cayman and I spotted Seven Mile Beach and said out loud “Now we’re talking!”

1. Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Maryland  and then I moved to Cayman after living in Manhattan for 13 years.

2. Why did you move from the comfort of your homeland?

New York City, as most know, is all about the hustle and bustle.  I was working 16 hour days at a record label spending 9-5 in my office and not getting home until after midnight most of the time after recruiting bands night after night. Eventually, when my golden birthday hit, I came to Cayman to visit my best friend Kiristen Cousins, and at that moment knew I needed to take a break and move to paradise for a little bit! The rest is history :)

3. What made you choose Cayman?

I had a best friend living here and JFK offers direct, affordable flights.  After visiting about five times before actually taking the leap, I had made so many wonderful friends that I was ready to create a new chapter.

1. Where are you from?

 County Wicklow, Ireland.

2. Why did you move from the comfort of your homeland?

I caught the travel bug but also wanted to experience a different working environment. A move to Grand Cayman made sense for many reasons.

3. What made you choose Cayman?

I loved the island when I visited as a tourist and a chance to work here then arose. It was too good of an opportunity to resist and see what Caribbean life was like.. that was 4 years ago.

1.  Where are you from?

I'm from Western Canada, Vancouver Island.

2. Why did you move from the comfort of your homeland?

I was consulting in the resort Industry helping set up operations, sales and marketing and building the teams within the properties. I got a call that the developer of the Wyndham Reef Resort wanted to see me. When I got here the proposal offered was very attractive and the thoughts of living in the Caribbean was very appealing. We had never considered such a move as we were so comfortable in Canada. At first we decided to try it for a year, see what it would feel like. Our kids are grown up and after 25 years of marriage a move to a small island was very intriguing. We took a chance really, and this year we celebrate our 5th year living in Grand Cayman.

3. What made you choose Cayman?

The Thompson family has deep roots in the Cayman Islands. I was very impressed after meeting with them and seeing their passion, integrity and desire to help others. At the same time they were very welcoming, willing to give us time to adapt and to learn about the culture and the country.
